Our 15U girls continued their climb to the top of the rankings with an incredible performance at the 15U PREMIER tournament this past weekend. Despite being seeded last (9th) and having some early morning jitters, the Thunder squad managed to put it all together for the afternoon playoffs.
Forced to win a pre-quarter match just to avoid last place, the girls rose to the challenge. A
dominant 2-0 victory over LVC meant they’d move on to play Niagara Rapids Black, a team that had gone undefeated in the morning. Our girls continued to roll however, as they once again shocked their ¼ final opponents in two straight sets. Most people present were amazed to see the 9th place team control all aspects of the match and qualify for the final four!
The semis would see a rematch between the Thunder and Georgetown Impact, a team that had beaten us 2-0 in the morning. The Thunder squad came to play from the opening serve on and were determined not to repeat the morning’s result. Playing their best volleyball of the season, the Oakville squad battled their way to a hard fought 2-1 victory. Once again leaving their opponents asking “What just happened?” Thunder 15U had qualified for the finals in their first Premier tournament!
With injuries and all out exhaustion taking over, the girls fought hard versus the Hurricanes squad but just couldn’t put together many strings of points. A 2-0 loss meant the dream day had come to an end but there were no tears. The Thunder team and their fans had lots to celebrate and be proud of.
Although exhaustion had set in, everyone agreed they couldn’t wait for the next tourney. The only thing left to do now is await our latest provincial rankings. It’d been an amazing climb thus far. Having begun the season in Trillium ranked 47th, following up a trillium gold (and moving to 27th) with a championship division gold and moving to 20th, the team hopes this result will bring about another big jump in the rankings. Regardless of that ranking, the entire Thunder Club congratulates all of the girls on their hard work, determination and improvement these past 5 months. We are so proud of you.
